GIF is one of the oldest graphics formats on the web. It supports transparency and animation, but it is capped at a 256-colour palette. PNG, by contrast, stores millions of shades and is usually larger, so converting pays off where compatibility matters more than colour accuracy.
The image is decoded, colours are reduced to a 256-shade palette, and transparent areas are kept as a dedicated index. When the palette runs short, dithering kicks in: nearby shades are mixed into a pattern so the eye does not notice banding. The result is considerably smaller than PNG when the source is a logo, an icon or a flat-colour diagram.
Do not use GIF for photographs and smooth gradients — 256 colours produce visible banding. For shots, illustrations with gradual transitions or gradients, WebP is a better fit, and for the widest printing compatibility use JPEG. If you need transparency together with a rich palette, keep the PNG.
